Let’s do some Derby!

Hamburger SV vs. FC St. Pauli. Sunday. ‘Nuff said.

Do whatever you can to watch this match, because it promises to be a good one! St. Pauli have found some good form lately and will want to continue that, while Hamburg badly want a win to get back on the right track after last week’s slip in Nürnberg. Both teams will be going for it full steam!

We had a 1-1 draw last time out between these two teams, so the result of this match will set the bragging rights in Hamburg for the rest of the year. Let’s hope for a good one, and no funny business with the fans outside the stadium!

Just to whet your appetite, here’s Mladen Petric’s stunning goal to tie the game last time. I’d like a couple more of these please:

Please now we’re both Hamburgers. Go start up the St. Pauli offside page instead of trolling this one.

As the St Pauli writer, I come in peace hoping for a great derby this Sunday.

I have respect for 99% of the HSV supporters and hope to see another great match like we had last time (minus the Petric heroics!)

Thanks Brian! I too hope for a great match and have no ill-will towards St. Pauli (or Celtic!). Hopefully Matt is just stirring up some excitement for the match. I remember some similar comments from the last derby, so hopefully its all in good fun. (I was going to say good clean fun, but clearly that does not apply!).

Ryan, you should check out Brian’s St. Pauli page at http://stpauli.theoffside.com . I think The Offside should update the header though so St. Pauli shows up with all the other Bundesliga teams, so more people can find it!

I totally agree, Mark. I have been trying to get it updated but so far no luck. I do hold a Hamburg loyalty so if St Pauli can’t represent the city well, then I wish the best to Hamburg.

But a win on Sunday sure would make me happy! :)

Just read that the derby is postponed tomorrow due to heavy rain flooding the pitch at the Imtech Arena: http://www.goal.com/en/news/15/germany/2011/02/05/2339411/hamburg-derby-postponed-due-to-heavy-rainfall

It’s supposed to be rescheduled for early next week. Damn! Nothing good to watch on Sunday now. I guess we have to be content with the Superbowl instead. Yawn…

Twwooops. Sorry for insinuating that there was no St. Pauli Offsides… they do need to get you guys on the top bar thing, I’ll bet a lot of people will follow it!
Anyway, pretty bummed there was so game this weekend. Maybe they’ll put it on a weekday and we can pretend like we were in Europe this year!

The game has been rescheduled to Feb. 16th.

Perhaps Aogo will get some good playing time today versus Italy. Verizon won’t let me use ESPN3 on my phone, so I’ll have to Gamecast it.

I thought Aogo looked great in the Italy game, I think he could be the answer to Germany’s LB problems… and I’m glad we just recently signed him, too!

Oh and I didn’t see the game but apparently Elia was absolutely terrific for the Dutch.

I didn’t get to see the Germany match, but I was very happy to hear that Aogo played the full 90 minutes and had a good game. I think if Loew had gotten him into the squad a little earlier, he could have played LB for the world cup. Badstuber and Boateng did an alright job, but it drives me crazy to see Loew playing guys out of their natural positions. He had two proper left backs in Jansen and Aogo available, but they didn’t see any action until the end. Oh well. I wish Aogo lots of luck in keeping his starting spot!

Starting to get some HSV withdrawal after the cancelled derby. But next week should be great – Wolfsburg on Saturday, St. Pauli on Wednesday, and Bremen the following Saturday. 3 northern derbies in a row! Fasten your seatbelts!

Yess and from what I read Diego will be suspended this week for taking a penalty when he shouldn’t have, so there goes one of their best players (and one of my favorites to watch, but not complaining).

The Wolfsburg match should be considered a must win. Wolfsburg canned McClaren, Diego is suspended, and Dzeko is gone. If HSV can’t turn this circumstance into a win, I think we can look forward to another craptacular spring. I don’t think HSV has made a run in the spring since Huub Stevens cleaned up Doll’s mess and lifted HSV from relegation to a UEFA Cup spot.

Ya – usually the spring is when the team starts to slide. But this year they never were really at the top apart from the first few weeks, so hopefully this year they can turn on the intensity for the spring and finish well!

On paper these next three games should be wins for Hamburg, but the derby factor and general inconsistency of the team could mess it all up. At least we pretty much have all the starters back from injury now (Mathijsen played for Holland this week), so if they can’t pull it together now, we’ll know it’s time for some major changes. I hope Armin Veh can figure out how to get all these individual talents to work together!

Wolfsburg 0-1 HSV. Nice to get the three points, however, I worry about the failure to score a goal from the field. The lone goal came from from a Petric PK. Great to have Mathijsen back. I love Jansen, but I Elia should be getting the playing time.

Yeah why can we never score goals? Our last like 5 games we’ve not scored more than once. I hear Elia is coming out publicly about not playing and the team having ‘no confidence’ in him, but with three games this week I didn’t think having Jansen start was too bad. Seeing as that position is clogged though, I wouldn’t mind them selling Elia for some decent money and then using that money to buy a creative central attacking mid… I think they could really use that. Now that I’m thinking about it, this summer should be active for HSV as Ruud and Ze will probably part their ways, and Jarolim and Rost aren’t getting any younger…
