Like sands through the hourglass . . .
By: Chris | January 24th, 2008. . .so are the days of the Bundesliga’s winter break. But slower. Seriously. I am sooooo ready for some football.
The search for Huub’s replacement continues and club Chairman Bernd Hoffman is taking a page out of OJ’s book and looking for candidates on the golf course. Today’s story in Bild details Herr Hoffman’s trip to Marbella for HSV legend Uwe Seeler’s charity golf tournament [Note: Man, I could really go for Spain right now. I woke up to a lovely chill this morning, to the tune of -34C. God I love the Midwest!] . Bild speculates that Hoffman’s playing partner might just be a darkhorse candidate, having spent 5 1/2 hours with him on the golf course. Who is this mystery man, you ask? Former Hannover and Bochum manager Peter Neururer (say that fast 3 times). Bild finally admits the Neururer is probably not a candidate, but did throw in a couple of names that I hadn’t read before, namely Marcel Koller (currently managing Bochum) and Michael Henke (an assistant at Bayern). Another story in Bild quotes several players, notably Bastian Reinhardt and Joris Mathijsen, as saying the club needs a manager who will be strong on discipline, and that is the prevailing sentiment throughout the club. If that were the case, it may just rule out a candidate like Jurgen Klopp from Mainz.
We can also rule out Otto Rehhagel. Die Kinder der Bundesliga has withdrawn his name from consideration (in as many words) by stating that he prefers to work with players older than 30, and who are married, as “a wife is the best training camp.” Whatever.

Pity about Otto. All power to Rutten then.:-) I could use some fresh Bundesliga football as well.

God, the wait is so tedious. Why is the break so long this year? Isn’t the summer break enough of a punishment?

A story on the club web site today states they will make the announcment in 6 to 8 weeks time and that they are down to 2 candidates–Rutten and Klopp.

Klopp has a very high media value and sympathy ratings, which would help bridge the gap vdV’s departure would leave in that area. But his coaching style is probably too much of a gamble.
