UEFA Cup
Circling the drain
By: Chris |Our Hanseaten heroes are back to their blundering ways, having lost any momentum they may have gained in their well-played defeat to Bremen, with their away loss to relegation-strugglers Cottbus. Cottbus, for their part, ensured that they will stay in the 1. Bundesliga with a victory. Not sure what else there is to say about [...]
Resolution? Ha!
By: Chris |We should know by the end of this week month season year decade who the new manager is. There really isn’t anything else left to write about this season.
Last week in this space, I speculated that the club’s directors hadn’t talked to Ex-Spurs boss Martin Jol about the post in a while. Turns out I am pretty [...]
HSV - Vfb Stuttgart Preview
By: Chris |The big match this weekend in the Bundesliga. Hamburg come in trying to regain their form, which they apparently left on the pitch in their last UEFA Cup match versus Leverkusen, while Stuttgart comes in a pretty big roll–to the tune of 4 wins in their last 5 matches at home. Vfb also come in [...]
Brawl in the Bundesliga
By: Chris |I was trying to come up with a WWE-esque title for this post, which really is about the chase for 2 of the 3 Champions League spots in the Bundesliga. I am not conceding the title to Bayern Munich by any stretch, but it will take a collapse of 1964 Phillies/2007 Mets proportion for the [...]
Danke Bochum!
By: Chris |Hamburg cruised to a 4-1 home victory over Frankfurt on Sunday, on a brace by Paolo Guerrero, and tallies Nigel de Jong and Mohamed Zidan. The match saw Huub really open up the offense and let the guys play. The highlights I’ve seen were superb, and if anything, HSV didn’t capitalize on all the chances [...]
Winner! Winner! Lobster dinner!
By: Chris | Updated : Bundesliga Offside captain Jan has a nice write-up on the Intertoto Cup “victory”. Read it here.
Overlooked in this space and others on The Offside was the fact that HSV backed into the Intertoto Cup as Atletico Madrid were ousted from the UEFA Cup in the Round of 32. So we got that going for us, [...]
That’s more like it
By: Chris |A 3-0 beatdown of relegation-bound Bochum in the B’liga and a 3-1 away win at Zurich in the UEFA Cup are the highlights of last week’s action. THAT’S what I’m talking about! We finally got the offense and the defense on the pitch together. Czech international David Jarolim contributed his first 2 goals of the season, a major [...]
News and Notes
By: Chris |I can’t bring myself to write about the match versus Leverkusen (as I couldn’t to write about the Hannover match, either). Suffice it to say that Frank Rost was a stone wall between the woodwork and the result could have been much worse. Right now, they can’t put a concerted defensive effort on simultaneous with [...]
News and notes
By: Chris |HSV broke training camp in Dubai on Sunday after winning the Dubai Football Challenge Cup. RvDV, for one, looks happy to be back up North.
Brilliance
By: Chris |I hate writing that about an opposing side’s keeper, but that’s exactly how to describe the performance of Cottbus’ Gerry Tremmel versus HSV on Saturday. And because of Tremmel’s brilliance, Cottbus stole a point from Hamburg and HSV failed to gain on either Bayern or Bremen in the table.
