Monday mourning

Turns out I am a realist. HSV dropped to third in the Bundesliga after Saturday’s away defeat to current title-holders Stuttgart, 1-0. The story of the match was Hamburg’s failure to capitalize on opportunities, particularly in the 2nd half when the practically camped out in the Stuttgart end. But in the end, they failed to score and now are third in the table on 47 points, 8 points adrift of first place Bayern and 1 back of Schalke.
News:
*Great article here about how Hamburg are giving away goals on set pieces. Bottom line: Defending set pieces is something that can be practiced and perfected, if the players want to improve.
*Juan Pablo Sorin made a triumphant return to the pitch following an extended absence. Sorin has been out all season with an infection in the knee he had surgically repaired over the summer. He came on at 86′ as a replacement for Timothee Atouba.
*Great write-up about the manager search. Louis van Gaal, who recently announced his intention to leave Eredivisie-side AZ Alkmaar at the end of the season, is the latest hot name to be mentioned. Usual suspect Jurgen Klopp of 2. Bundesliga-side Mainz is also kicked around, along with a new name: Schalke manager Mirko Slomka. This story kind of ran out of gas when Slaven Bilic said thanks, but no thanks, and now has some legs again. The fact that the search has been drawn out now 4 months is pissing a lot of people off–from directors of other clubs, like Mainz (who may or may not lose their manager depending on the whims of HSV) to members of the media (who, according to a quote from Berndt Hoffman [chairman of HSV], are making waaaaay too big a deal about this; does that include me? I am pissed this is taking so long. I’m a quasi-member of the media. Does that count for anything?). To quote an oft used phrase in the USA, Get’er Done!
*Mohammed Zidan did not start as expected on Saturday–the start at striker went to Paolo Guerrero–and Vincent Kompany moved up to midfield to take David Jarolim’s (out-suspended) spot. Interesting formation that we may see more of next season, when there is a more conspicuous absence from the lineup.

I was surprised Zidan didn’t get the start. Any word on if he’s looking to capitalize on Egypt’s win and move out of the Nordbank Arena?

He only scores while wearing a Mainz jersey

‘To quote an oft used phrase in the USA, Get’er Done!’
Aye aye, even though I’m not an American.
This is taking too long!Posted from

I’m not sure what Zizou’s done (or not done) but he is getting absolutely no PT right now, and that’s really odd in light of Olic’s injury.

Diana, the fact that the search is dragging on is not terribly big news when compared to the fact Mirko Slomka is a pretty serious candidate for the post. I can’t wait to see how this plays out.

Chris, I had to admit when I first read that Mirko Slomka had been linked to the HSV job, I almost fell out of my chair. I’m not joking.
Of the names being kicked around (just like how you say it), the Schalke coach was far from my list to succeed Huub Stevens. My initial favourite is Slaven Bilic but he withdrew himself out of the race and so it’s back to square one until Slomka was mentioned.
I still remembered when apparently it was reported that Slomka’s position at Schalke is under threat if the club don’t start winning matches. Then ahead of their Champions League knockout match against Porto (this was the second-leg in Portugal), I remembered they were hosting Bayern (I streamed that match and so I knew) and they lost. Then Schalke were through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League on penalties. Everything seemed to be okay afterwards…or so I believed. I was actually just musing about it over the weekend on what a difference weeks can make for Slomka, but it all shattered when I saw this yesterday - http://www.sportinglife.com/football/overseas/germany/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=international_feed/08/04/07/SOCCER_Ger-Schalke.html&TEAMHD=germany
It’s about a Schalke board member saying that Slomka’s chances of staying at the club for the following season is ’slim’. His contract last until then. Mirko Slomka for HSV? Hmm…

Now darn, now I had forgotten where was it I first read that Slomka’s contract at the moment last till the following season. Been trying to track my original source, but nothing.

This whole Mirko Slomka to Hamburg rumour is the least likely to come true IMHO. Mirko Slomka famously degraded Frank Rost and put Manuel Neuer in goal to win back the dressing room at Schalke. Frank Rost then joined Hamburg, solved their goalkeeper problem and already indicated that he would like to end his career in Hamburg. Why provoke trouble?
I would be happy to see either Rutten, van Gaal or Klopp at Hamburg.

About Zidan: it seems that Stevens played it safe and only started with Guerrero, just like Veh played it safe and only started with Cacau instead of giving Marica a chance alongside Cacau. It’s too bad. Zidan is in a similar situation as Podolski. A waste of potential.
But maybe things will be different against Duisburg this weekend. And Hamburg can win back the ground they lost as Schalke and Bremen / Stuttgart and Leverkusen will all take points from each other.

I’ll go on record as saying my choice of manager would be Van Gaal, Rutten, then Klopp, in that order. I have a feeling that Rutten is out of the running.

Chris, Klopp’s out of the running. Mainz’s official website has stated that he will remain with the club. I first saw a report of it here - http://209.85.135.104/translate_c?hl=en&langpair=de%7Cen&u=http://de.eurosport.yahoo.com/09042008/30/klopp-bundesliga-aufstieg-mainzer-trainer.html&tbb=1
