News and notes
By: Chris | January 16th, 2008HSV broke training camp in Dubai on Sunday after winning the Dubai Football Challenge Cup. RvDV, for one, looks happy to be back up North.

Team notes:
-The dates have been set for the 3rd round ties of the UEFA Cup with FC Zurich–away on 14.02.2008 and home on 21.02.2008. Both matches are sold-out, B-T-W.
-The club have begun the search for Huub Stevens’ replacement.
Player signings:
Jonathan Pitroipa - 21 year-old midfielder from 2 Bundesliga side Feiburg. He will join the club following the current season. HSV appear to be shoaring up the midfield in anticpation of you-know-who’s departure this summer.
Vadis Odjidja-Ofoe - 18 years-old from Anderlecht. He has already joined the club and participated in the Dubai training sessions.
Anton Putsilo - 20 year-old midfielder on a one-year loan from Dinamo Minsk. He also joined the side in Dubai and played in the match against Vasco De Gama. HSV have a 2.5M option to purchase him at the end of the trial.

I still remember how Didi Beiersdorfer received a lot of flack for Hamburg’s transfer policy. Selling their two central defenders van Buyten and Boulahrouz was considered one reason for Hamburg’s drop to the relegation places. But he replaced van Buyten with Kompany and Boulahrouz with Mathisjen and made some money at the same time. Kompany won the best Belgian player award, while van Buyten didn’t make the top three. Boulahrouz is only sitting on the bench in the Dutch national team, while Mathisjen makes the starting XI. Not bad.
I wonder whether HSV stacking up their midfield with so many young players, is really an indicator, that they won’t use the vdV millions to bring in another superstar, but hope one of the young players makes his breakthrough. It seems they are also interested in Michael Bradley, who Dutch side Heerenveen hope to sell in the summer to turn a profit, before the contract runs out…
