Quick hitters from today’s news. . .

HSV\'s new 10?•Late word yesterday that Hamburg are “interested” In Heerenveen midfielder and USA international Michael Bradley. This is not the first time that Bradley’s name has come up in connection with HSV and he fits their transfer profile to a “T”–young (21), experienced (4+ years of pro football, since 2006 in the Eredivisie) and cheap (well, not so much, but at this point, he’s at about the same point in his career as van der Vaart was when he came to Hamburg)–and fits the team needs–a true #10, a creative midfielder to replace VDV. No discussion of his price, though. Final thoughts:  Beiersdorfer and Company have been true to their words in A) getting a quality replacement for Kompany (Alex Silva); B) adding depth and quality to the defense by adding Monzon (and hopefully selling Atouba to Celtic, thereby killing 2 birds with one stone); and C) getting a true finisher (Petric). Now they *appear* to be fulfilling their final promise to the supporters by replacing VDV with another creative force in the midfield–Bradley.  They need to do something to keep up with Schalke, Bayern and especially Wolfsburg, who in my estimation have lept over Hamburg and Bremen, and are now the third best team in the Bundesliga. If they go and get Bradley, they will have assembled a roster with a goal in mind (to qualify for the Champions League), rather than acquiring talent for the sake of talent, as they seemed to have done in the past.

•HSV have drawn 1. Bundesliga side Vfb Bochum in the next round of the DFB Pokal (German Cup).  Last season in the Bundesliga, Hamburg lost 1:2 away and were victorious 3:0 at home. The match will be played 23 or 24 September at the ‘Bank (HSH Nordbank Arena in Hamburg). The match date and times have not been set yet.

•Even though he took the corner which led to the winning goal by Joris Mathijsen, Anis Ben-Hatira is likely to be moved soon. The leading contenders for his services are Hannover and NĂĽrnberg, with NĂĽrnberg a more likely destination as they are not in the 1. Bundesliga this season. HSV are waiting to solidfy the midfield (see: Bradley above) before loaning Ben-Hatira out. Last season, Ben-Hatira’s father and agent went to the team management to express their extreme displeasure with his playing time with the first team and requested a loan or his release. Looks like they will get their wish with the loan. . .

•Other possible candidates for the “vacancy” in the midfield are reported to be (in no particular order):  Crotian international and Heerenveen midfielder Danijel Pranjic (whose price is thought to be too high, especially with Juventus and Tottenham hot on his trail as well), Leon Andreasen of EPL side Fulham, and NIko Krancjar of Portsmouth. OK-if Pranjic’s price is too high, what’s that make Bradley’s price?

•Bastian Reinhardt has sufficiently recovered from his torn calf muscle that he will be return to training this week.

Yeah, good point about Pranjic v. Bradley’s price at the end. Bradley may come more cheaply, but only because he has made it clear he wants to leave and will do so next summer. Has Pranjic made similar statements?

Matt, Bradley is to Heerenveen as van der Vaart was to Hamburg this season, and as you wrote, Heerenveen ought to be motivated to get as much as they can for the guy right now. I would be quite happy to *settle* for Bradley!

Bradley at HSV is a great idea — they’d really give him the opportunity, experience, and discipline to grow his talent. But the ever-reliable Goal.com is reporting a bid has been put in for Kranjcar.

im just worried that theyll get too many different languages on the same team, like they say is happening with the FCB back 4. as much as i hope they get bradley, if no one else is speaking english, hows he going to fit in as the director of our offense? esp. opposed to kranjcar, who speaks the same croatian as olic and petric.

It always sounds wierd to have the word “roster” used in a football context. It’s such an Americanism that my feeble mind cannot handle hearing it outside of American football. It’s a squad when the ball is on the deck.

Knranjcar would be perfect but completely impossible. Pompey wouldn’t sell and we wouldn’t have the money needed to force their hand. I don’t think Bradley is a like-for-like replacement for Rafa but he’d be a good signing nonetheless.

I have been following the Hamburg forum for quite a while and I have not seen any discussion about Bradley yet. I also heard Huszti of Hannover is rumoured to be among the list of candidates. I dont think Hamburg will no longer be interested in Kranjcar as he is injured and wont be back for like 5 or 6 weeks?

” if no one else is speaking english, hows he going to fit in as the director of our offense?”

Maybe the dude who’s writing the English version of the HSV webpage could be hired as an interpreter. They could wire the team up and Bradley’s commands are simultaneously translated. If he picked up some Dutch during his time at Heerenveen, he could alternatively talk to de Jong, Mathijsen or Castelen who could then translate from Dutch to German. Petric grew up in Switzerland, so he speaks perfect German. Petric could then translate to Croatian. Although that would be optional since Olic has a German wife and I heard him give interviews in fluent German. It’s all a bit complex but it could work. ;-)

Alternatively Hamburg could gamble on the fact, that probably every player on the squad learnt English at school. And picking up the basic German vocabulary needed to give directions etc. probably takes one or two weeks.

I think Jan makes a pretty good point–Bradley *had* to have picked up some Dutch in the 2 years he’s been at Heerenveen. In the larger cities like The Hague or Rotterdam or Amsterdam (or their suburbs/surrounding communities), lots of people speak english. But it would be less common for people in a smaller community like Heerenveen to speak english. Add to that the fact that the gaffer and half the side are Dutch and I think he’ll fit right in.

“Petric grew up in Switzerland, so he speaks perfect German.” – Jan

I hope that’s optional, because if the team has to rely on someone speaking Swiss German to be intelligible then Hamburg’s struggling against relegation this year. ;)
