Brawl in the Bundesliga
By: Chris | March 27th, 2008I was trying to come up with a WWE-esque title for this post, which really is about the chase for 2 of the 3 Champions League spots in the Bundesliga. I am not conceding the title to Bayern Munich by any stretch, but it will take a collapse of 1964 Phillies/2007 Mets proportion for the Bavarians not to at least make it back to the CL. Here’s how the Bundesliga table looks heading into matchday 26 (28 March - 30 March):

The top 2 finishers get the Bundesliga’s guaranteed places in the Champions League group stage; 3rd place gets a place in the Champions League qualifying round. 4th and 5th places are guaranteed group places in the UEFA Cup, and 6th place is shit-outta-luck. For the sake of brevity, we’re going to exclude Bayern (for reasons described previously) and Stuttgart from our discussions (I mean, c’mon, look at Stuttgart–they’re freaking Helter Skelter this year. What’s that say about the state of the B’liga last year?). If the season ended last week, HSV are in. Ah, but what’s that you say? There’s still some football to be played? Oh yeah, that old chestnut. Let’s take a closer look at each teams remaining matches:

Quick analysis: Nobody plays Bayern. Hamburg and Leverkusen appear to have an edge with 5 home matches.
Deeper analysis:
-Hamburg have 2 potential 6-point matches remaining (Schalke, Bremen) and both are at home. HSV have 4 matches (2 home, 2 away) with teams in the bottom 5 of the table.
-Leverkusen have 1 potential 6-pointer, with Bremen, at home. They have 3 remaining matches with teams in the bottom 5 (all away). Leverkusen are also still alive in the UEFA Cup.
-Bremen have 3 potential 6-point matches remaining, 2 on the road. They have 3 remaining matches with teams in the bottom 5 (2 home, 1 away).
-Schalke have 2 potential 6-pointers remaining, both on the road. They have 4 matches against the bottom feeders (2 home, 2 away). Schalke are also still alive in the Champions League.
Final thoughts:
I think that Hamburg have the most favorable schedule of the 4 clubs in contention, and I am going out on a limb and saying they will at least grab the 3rd CL spot, with second a very real possibility. They absolutely have to bag six points from the Schalke and Bremen matches. Bremen have the best opportunity to distance themselves from the pack with matches against all of the other 3 clubs in contention, but I don’t know where they will stand in all this in the end–could be second, could be fifth. I wonder about the demands that the UEFA Cup and Champions League matches will place on Leverkusen and Schalke, respectively. You can probably pencil Leverkusen through to the UEFA Cup semis (they drew Zenit St. Petersburg in the quarters), where they would potentially meet Bayern, meaning another 4 games not in this analysis. But I think their remaining schedule gets them to at least the CL qualifying spot (3rd place). Schalke drew Barcelona in the quarters and have a possibility of advancing the way Barca’s season has gone, but how likely is that? Not too sure, but Schalke do have the 2 games with Barcelona in there that I didn’t account for.
Why is this such a big deal? Well, clubs get €10M when they qualify for the group stages of the Champions League, and that would add quite nicely to the old war chest for some August transfers, and thus the urgency to secure one of the top 2 places in the table. Third place is OK, but you always run the risk of not qualifying for the group stages–kinda like Ajax this year.
Super SWAG Prediction-Final Bundesliga Standings (ought to be fun to look back and how much of a smart-ass or dumb-ass I really am):
1. Bayern Munich
2. Hamburger SV
3. Bayer Leverkusen
4. FC Schalke ‘04
5. Werder Bremen

So I’m sensing that you don’t think dear old Schalke will get the automatic invite next year that Milan got this year?

Nope, they’re not going to get it.

I can’t resist adding Stuttgart to the list. The gap is just three points, Gomez is on fire and other players are finding their form again and they sort of sorted out their goalkeeper problem with young Ulreich.
30-Mar @ Hanover
5-Apr v. Hamburg
13-Apr @ Leverkusen
16-Apr v. Nuremberg
27-Apr @ Bayern
3-May v. Frankfurt
6-May @ Dortmund
10-May @ Wolfsburg
17-May v. Bielefeld
4 home, 5 away3 six pointers remaining (with tough away games at Leverkusen and Bayern). Two teams from the drop zone with Bielefeld possibly fighting for their lives on matchday 34. Three midtable teams who might still want to take at least the Intertoto spot away from Stuttgart. It’s a tough schedule but also an exciting one. I don’t think they can go 3rd, but probably shake up the UEFA Cup spots. But then again, nobody anticipated their spectacular run-in last season, so they might be a surprise bet for 3rd.
I also think that Hamburg have the easiest route to the CL. And a second place should be their minimum goal. It’s also worth almost €2,5m extra from the Champions League, as the UEFA pay some of their money according to league ranking. This season it was roughly: 1st €8m, 2nd €6m, 3rd €3,5m. And you have the uncertainty of qualification.
I’d like to see either Schalke, Bremen or Stuttgart take 3rd place instead of Leverkusen though.

Stuttgart do have a match versus Bayern left, which none of the other 5 do, and that match is away.
I think that Leverkusen have shown consistency if nothing else. I really think Bremen aren’t in one of the CL spots, and I don’t think Schalke are either, so Leverkusen kind of backed into in my mind. Your argument about some of the teams in the drop zone fighting for their lives is very relevant, but I didn’t want to figure that into this analysis. If you look at Hamburg from last season, they went on a 7 or 8 match winning streak at one point and jumped from last to seventh by the end of the season.
I hope that this post does stir up some debate.

I would like to remind people of my spectacularly correct prediction of the Intertoto Cup race last season (http://bundesliga.theoffside.com/matchday-coverage/the-big-bundesliga-season-finale-preview.html). So, I’m confident that Leverkusen won’t get it.;-)

Touche’, Jan. And it was fun watching VdV in Europe, wasn’t it?
And as I’ve written before, I have a special place in my heart full of distaste/contempt for Leverkusen (it’s right next to the places for Bremen and Bayern) after losing out to them in the UEFA Cup on goals, so it’s not exactly as though I am cheering for them.

‘WWE-esque title’
I just can’t stop giggling at that for some reason, Chris. It just reminds me of a relative of mine who’s a fan of WWE and…it’s a she.
I’m not kidding.‘Super SWAG Prediction-Final Bundesliga Standings (ought to be fun to look back and how much of a smart-ass or dumb-ass I really am)’
I will look back at this page when the season ends and see if you are totally accurate…or not. I don’t know I should be saying this given you mentioned Leverkusen, Chris. *looking around nervously* For some reason or another, I could had chosen Leverkusen to be my Bundesliga team to follow. Maybe it all started when I saw a past Champions League match involving them once on pay-TV here (it was showing a series of past Champions League matches then but then I forgot whom their opponent was). I was actually thinking about it ahead of the Bayern Munich-Bayer Leverkusen match last week on what it could have been. To be precise, I was talking about it on my blog (you have to scroll it down) - http://littlemissdiana.blogspot.com/2008/03/oh-horror.html
But I didn’t chose the club in the end when I first started to follow the Bundesliga after the end of the World Cup. Given to think about it now, you would have ‘hate’ me as I said before as having a soft spot for HSV.

It’s not hate, it’s contempt, or distaste. More like, “man, I REALLY don’t like Leverkusen.”

Okay. Noted.
