De Jong Update
By: Chris | January 19th, 2009It’s all done but the signing. HSV has agreed to Manchester City’s transfer offer of €20.5M, and now all that’s left is for De Jong’s agent to negotiate a contract for Nigel with the Citizens.
That’s all well and good, but what should HSV do with the dough? I’d love to hear your comments on:
•Replacement for De Jong. The name we continue to hear is Mark van Bommel of Bayern, but lately we also are hearing Christian Paulsen of Juve, *and* newly trialed Marcel Ndjengs (formerly of ‘Gladbach). The old Demy de Zeeuw rumor from the fall doesn’t appear to have any legs, so I don’t know what to make of it. Personally, I’d love to see Van Bommel.
•Replacement for Olic. My good friends at the Abendblatt say that Serb striker Milan Jovanovic of Standard Liege would be a good fit and is available for around €7M. I have *no* idea on this one.
•Any other moves before the 30 January match at the ‘Bank with Bayern. I think we need some additional depth on defense. When Alex Silva comes back, he may take De Jong’s spot (he was outstanding there while De Jong was rehabbing his knee) and we may be looking for more defense. There is another rumor swirling around that Rafael van der Vaart may be coming back to the fold, but it wouldn’t be until this summer.
Bear in mind that Alex Silva is out until approximately the first week of February and that Atouba is done for the year.

A good deal for HSV, I think. How could they possibly turn down €20M for De Jong? He’s a good player, and potentially a very good player but that sort of many is a bit crazy.
In my opinion, his probable market value is around €8. But if you’re offered €20M, you’re not going to turn it down..

The van Bommel rumor has been shot down by Bayern, who stated they won’t sell in the winter. It seems their potential deal with Tymoschuk is tied to the summer. But a free transfer in the summer doesn’t sound too bad to me. He could compete with/replace David Jarolim?
I think Hamburg are currently linked to three Liege players and all those players are also heavily linked to some big dogs in the business. They won’t come cheap and I don’t think Hamburg should overpay, just because they’ve just been overpaid.

Wayne, I am with you 100%. I *love* Nigel de Jong, but twenty million is too much to pass up–that’s crazy money.

Nothing is confirm yet, apparently de Jong is still he’s still hesitating about the move to Manchester City, maybe Robinho going AWOL or Kaka not joining City is making him think about it.

Apparently Bild and Abendblatt have confirmed the de Jong transfer, only transfermarket.de has not confirm it yet. HSV are looking at the Belgian market for their ‘ No. 6 ‘, the two candidates are Steven Defour of Standard Liege and Lucas Biglia of Anderlecht.
g, you’re not the only one, I have a HSV jersey with Van der Vaart on it *lol*

I have news. It has been confirmed by Manchester City that De Jong has completed his switch to there. It will be a four-and-a-half year contract.
