Fighting for 5th Place
By: Mark | March 4th, 2011Sorry I don’t have a lot of time for a big post today, so I’ve decided to give you a few links for some recent HSV topics. Check them out and then come back here to provide some commentary on what you think! The main thing I’m wondering about is how you feel about players like Jarolim and Trochowski. How would you feel if they left at the end of the year?
Last week’s 1-1 draw left me feeling underwhelmed. It was a good goal by Jansen to even the score (the picture above shows Jansen doing my favorite cheesy goal-celebration), but HSV really should have dug deep and found a way to pick up the winner. Such is the way of this team lately. If they manage to get into 5th place, it will be with lots of ups and downs and very slow progression in the standings. A win on Sunday against Mainz is nearly crucial, but then we play Bayern the week after. My hope is that Hamburg can win this weekend by a 2 goal margin to get into 5th spot, and then try to draw next weekend to not fall too far back again. An away draw in Munich is always a decent result.
So good luck to Hamburg against Mainz, and here is your reading list: Enjoy!

To Trochowski, I can’t blame him. He doesn’t quite fit into HSV’s current team but I do think he could be very good in the right situation. As for Jarolim… I know he’s an HSVer since 2003, and seems like a really good man, but he’s not really that great or anything. He sort of embodies to me what is slightly wrong with HSV – lots of fundamentals, don’t lose the ball, make your proper tackles… but no real spunk and creativity, no threat to shoot outside the box. If he goes, and most likely Ze goes, then HSV will really have to do something about their CDMs.

Interesting take on Jaro – sometimes I find when he’s not in the lineup that the team looks aimless. But I understand your points. He certainly is never a threat to take a shot on goal! But he always is able to get fouled because of his ability to hang onto the ball. Sometimes he just gets fouled instead of trying to make a creative play though. I’ve never seen another guy who can draw fouls so often and yet it doesn’t look like he’s diving.
I was hoping after Ze Roberto leaves that Jarolim and Kacar would be the CDM combo – but I think they both play on the right side, so maybe the coach wants a lefty at CDM too. But we haven’t really gotten to see other combinations that don’t include Ze. Maybe Jaro/Troche for example.
Anyway, I can see that Jarolim may not look like a very important member of the squad, but I still like him. Here’s an example of his spunk from a couple years ago that was shown on a GolTV promo all the time: Jarolim got a red card for arguing with an opposing player and then grabbing his “package”. The announcer simply stated, “Those aren’t coins in his pocket!”. Amazing.

Hmm that’s true, he does pick up cards and control the game well from that position. I guess it’s not so much him but an HSV problem, so many of the games we play are so controlled and boring, and we end up getting hit on the counter anyway. Perhaps it’s not the many internationals that we have on the team, but a poor philosophy throughout the organization. The board hires a mediocre coach (outside of what seems like Jol) and then he does mediocrely and then gets fired. To think we almost had Jürgen Klopp a couple of years ago only for HSV to not hire him based on how much control he wanted. I can imagine someone like Elia would do great on the tricky / running based BVB team that he runs today.
I really hope they don’t do the musical chairs of German coaches thing that I cannot for the life of me figure out. Armin Veh won the title under Stuttgart, but interviews with players say that all their tactics came about by accident amongst the players in practice. It sometimes seems like a lot of HSV players don’t know where their teammates are, don’t know who to pass to etc. Frank Arnesen seems like a big step in the right direction and I hope he makes the right decisions personal wise in the offseason…

Oh man, disaster time. 4-2 loss to the pretty boys of Mainz. Things are looking bleak right now.

Nice to see we’re scoring goals now. Sometimes for the other team!

Ha ha – and sometimes they just look like goals!

Turns out those weren’t OG’s. ESPN Soccernet hadn’t fixed the stats by the time I commented.
Goal is reporting that Veh will be gone this summer. Now that the team is pretty much rudderless, I don’t see much hope to qualify for Europe next year. I think a loss against reeling FC Bayern would pretty much seal it. Prove me wrong Rothosen!
