Latest De Jong update
By: Chris | January 21st, 2009As reported in this space earlier, HSV agreed to Manchester City’s offer of 18-20 million Euro (depending on who you’re asking) for the rights to midfielder Nigel de Jong, and now there is a report in today’s edition of Bild (and confirmed by Kicker.de) stating De Jong has agreed to terms with City to the tune of 4 million Euro per annum. This make De Jong’s transfer fee the 3rd highest ever paid for a Bundesliga player, behind only Owen Hargreaves (ManU paid Bayern €25M in 2007) and Emerson (Roma paid Leverkusen €20M in 2005). Wow. And Hamburg turned a nice little profit in the long run, having paid Ajax only €1.5M for De Jong in 2006.
De Jong did not return with the team to Hamburg following the conclusion of the training camp in La Manga, Spain (he travelled to Manchester for a physical) and did not play in yesterday’s 3:0 victory over Hansa Rostock. And as a complete aside, has there been a more precipitous fall in recent memory than Rostock? Two years ago they were in the 1. Bundesliga, then were relegated after last season, and now are in danger of being relegated from the 2. Bundesliga. Yikes.
So our attention now can turn to three topics: 1) New transfers; 2) the DFB-Pokal match versus 1860 Munich on Tuesday; 3) the Bayern match on 30 January.
For new transfers, there have been a number of rumors reported in the comments of the last post regarding players from Belgium, notably Steven Defour of Standard Liege and Lucas Biglia of Anderlecht. In today’s online edition of Kicker.de, the name of Stade Rennes defensive midfielder Stephane Mbia was bandied about and HSV are reportedly negotiating a transfer. From what I found on the Rennes club website, I like this Cameroon international. Mbia is 22 years old and is under contract with Rennes until 2012. Mbia has been capped 12 times scoring 3 goals, and his national coach says he is the real deal/next big thing/all that and a bag of chips/etc. He is also being scouted by Newcastle (who isn’t?). Christian Paulson and Demy de Zeeuw are still rumored to be in the mix.
As for the Cup tie with 1860, Ivica Olic still does not know his status following the red card in the Hoffenheim “friendly” last week. A suspension looks likely, but since the match was a friendly (and not a DFB sponsored contest), there is some speculation that only a fine to be donated to charity is in the offing. Mladen Petric sat out the Rostock match with a sore calf, but is expected to train and play versus 1860 Munich.

Looking at the positives: with vdV and de Jong gone, the only players with cheap buyout clauses kicking in sometime have been sold for a very nice profit. I also quickly checked the contracts of the remaining HSV squad and all current and future key players have contracts running until 2012 or 2013 with the exception of Trochowski (2011). Frank Rost’s contract runs until 2010 but I think he’s keen to extend it.

Rost has recently been extended to 2012.
You hit on a point that I wasn’t sure pertained to this discussion–the rumors that De Jong was headed to Madrid this summer for a low price.

Chris, a tidy little profit would be 4-5 mil. A profit of 15-17 million might just pay off all my student loans. That’s *crazy* money.
De Jong is a good player and all, but he’s no Ribery (whose price, incidentally, is getting crazy, too).

There’s another new name linked with us, Lorik Cana of Olympique Marseille according to Abendblatt

‘This make De Jong’s transfer fee the 3rd highest ever paid for a Bundesliga player’
Like you Chris, wow. I have to blink my eyes a few times over the amount! And you reminded me of something, Chris. Any mention of Owen Hargreaves just makes me want to sigh.
You know I am a ManU supporter (*cough cough*), and I am actually very worried he may not even play again given of his knee problem. I know that is the worst case scenario, but since he has been referring to reowned specialist in Dr. Richard Steadman, I do not seemed to hear much since. I once read that Dr. Steadman had met with an accident and that was the last thing I read.Where I first really know about Dr. Steadman – http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/leagues/premierleague/manutd/3472516/Man-Utd-midfielder-Owen-Hargreaves-career-in-safe-hands-with-Dr-Richard-Steadman-Football.html
Since Hargreaves came to ManU from Bayern, he did not played much matches given of the knee problem he has. Just like almost a week ago or something, the topic of Hargreaves was raised by my father (the other ManU supporter in my family) and we were just talking about it. Looking at the price ManU paid Bayern Munich back then for Hargreaves, I am very afraid it might eventually all go to waste. I was initially hopeful back then given he came with the experience playing for a major European club in Bayern.
Not trying to sound pessimistic though. I have always want to look at a glass half full of water.
