Latest on Van der Vaart
By: Chris | August 1st, 2008Reports this morning on Spanish radio have VDV agreeing to a €9m transfer to Real. More after the drop.
According to a story here, the deal is done and done. The source of the report is Cadena Ser, which is, according to Wikipedia, “the principal radio station in Spain” and “a leader in covering sports.” OK, so maybe a slightly more credible source. . . BUT, doesn’t this strike anyone else as odd that this is the literally the same “story” (read: fabrication) that Asreported earlier this week. This is followed up by statements from HSV management that there has been no contact from Real since they (RM) made their initial €5.5m offer–almost as if HSV management were saying, Hey look guys, if we’re gonna make a deal, you at least have to talk to us. A final check of the most credible source on the subject–The Hamburger Morgen Post–yielded this gem. To paraphrase, Mopo seems to think that we will be witnessing Rafa’s last matches in an HSV kit this weekend. If Real is going to buy him, HSV had better stick to their hard line approach and get the €12m they really want for VDV. This is starting to become a distraction for the club, not unlike the search for a new manager this spring.
Saturday, HSV square off against the aforementioned Real in an Emirates Cup match. The match starts at 2PM BST (9AM EDT) and every eye in Emirates Stadium will likely be on Rafa to see whether he can tempt RM into offering more dough. Sunday, Serie A giants Juventus are on the docket (2PM BST/9AM EDT). And best of all, both matches are going to be televised (GolTV) in the US. I’m not going to offer a prediction for either match
. Here’s hoping for some really entertaining football, especially if it’s the last we’ll see of VDV in the Rothosen.

I don’t know whether those €9m are just what Hamburg gets, or whether Hamburg have to pay Ajax their share from it. In case of the latter, it would effectively only be €8m. The difference to next years buy-out clause would be a mere €6,5m. I’ve already outlined my reasons why vdV is worth more money for Hamburg if he stays another season.
Something else to consider: The Fly Emirates shirt sponsorship deal runs out after this season. It’s worth just €5m a year. Hamburg have taken a very positive development since they brokered that deal, so I would rate their chances for a much improved deal very high. Playing a positive season and in a best case scenario make the CL would help to get a maximum from such a deal (Hertha get €8m, Schalke €15m, Bayern €20m as a reference point). So again, vdV could be a factor to increase long term revenue…

Not going to spoil the news just in case you haven’t found out what happened to the HSV at the Emirates Cup, Chris. One thing I can say on Martin Jol’s ‘return’ to England – Good news for the HSV in that ‘tournament’.
One thing is for certain though. This piece of news have started to surface in some places already on my Internet travels. I have checked a number of reliable sites and all more or less said the same thing – VDV is on his way to Real Madrid. I supposed it came in the wake of VDV’s Holland team-mate Wesley Sneijder (who plays in the midfield) was injured in the Emirates Cup yesterday which Real lost to Arsenal and reports suggested that Sneijder could be out for up to six months. I’m not going to be too surprised if that is really the case which intensified the move for VDV to Real.
Two reliable of those reliable news sources, if you like Chris (no worries, Marca was never mentioned at both links) – http://www.sportinglife.com/football/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=international_feed/08/08/04/SOCCER_Ger-Hamburg_Van_der_Vaart.html&TEAMHD=soccer (Sporting Life), http://football.uk.reuters.com/european/news/L1629387.php (Reuters)
I actually first found out about the news when I was on the kicker website. Now I just hope (God forbid!) those CR7-to-Real Madrid rumours will start to die out. Being a ManU supporter (when I am not following news on the Bundesliga), I am so sick and tired of those rumours for a long time already.

Oh yes. FIFA.com interviewed BMJ (damn, I have to get used that even though I am already aware of Jol’s nickname when he was at Spurs) and from what I read, it happened before VDV’s Real move was more or less became a reality.

VDV’s site apparently states that he’s moving to Real?

That means confirming what I had read from the FIFA website (they got the report from AFP) that the deal has been sealed. He said that he will be presented as a Real player on Tuesday.
