An interview with former HSV star Manfred Kaltz (who is 55, b-t-w. I cannot FREAKING believe that Manny Kaltz is 55; that makes me . . .) reveals that Kaltz doesn’t like HSV’s long term prospects. Too many players who are dead wood that nobody wants (Atouba, Sorin, Zidan), and the one guy that everybody wants (VDV) is the last guy they need to sell. And when they do sell him, Manny feels that HSV does not have a blueprint for taking the transfer fee and building the team into a championship side. He compares HSV with Felix Magath’s Wolfsburg (who do have the distinct benefit of a corporate owner and deeper pockets) and notes that Magath “builds his team with a target and structure.” And lastly, ol’ Manny doesn’t think that new manager Martin Jol deserves double the salary of ex-manager Huub Stevens, at least until he delivers double the results. Where does he foresee HSV finishing next season? Fourth or fifth. Yech. Thoughts: Well, HSV had to pay Jol what the market would bear, so that’s a moot point. But I do tend to agree that HSV seem to be putting the side together without a specific set of targets and timetables. And I doubt that you will find an HSV supporter anywhere who doesn’t feel the same way about Atouba and Zidan. Sorin missed most of last season recovering from injury, and I think, once fit, he will work out fine.

Arsene Wenger’s been watching Da Man since Vince was 16. Wenger further reveals that while he adores Kompany, Kompany is not a transfer target this summer.

An interesting interview with VDV’s “second papa”–former Ajax star Sjaak Swart. He’s advising VDV to go to England–particularly, The Big Four.

You can guess where I spent my morning. Colin Benjamin has missed Namibia’s last two WC qualifiers (losses to Zimbabwe and Guinea) with a toe injury he suffered this past spring in Hamburg. He will be fit and ready to go when pre-season training commences in July.

Okay. Hope you and your family are safe, Chris. When I first heard about the news, I was like thinking ‘Chris!’. Ah, me worrying whether you are okay… :P

And you need not guess where I had been spending my morning since Euro 2008 started. Because of the time difference (6 hours), the matches are all being played in the early hours of the morning. Now that the matches are all played at 2045 Central European Time, it’s 2.45am the following day at where I am. I had tried to catch 40 winks just a few hours before the matches started but in vain. Ended up at one time in one of the past afternoons this month, I found myself asleep on the sofa half the time.

Diana, I meant I spent my time on Bild’s web site. Things are OK in our town but not so good in another town we used to live in. You can see some photos of that town here: http://www.presscitizen.com

Ouch. So I had guessed wrongly on what you are doing. My bad.

    Oh dear.

So, do you think your club’s Dutch trio (VDV, De Jong, Mathijsen) will be in van Basten’s starting XI against Romania?

I don’t think VDV will play. I think that De Jong could go either way and I think Mathijsen will play. I have been really keen to watch Holland play so well–especially since 3 of the starting XI are from HSV.

    ;)

And by the way, none of three are in the starting XI against Romania.

Good to hear that things are OK your town Chris.

Anyway, about HSV: next season could at worst be another 2006/2007 disaster. We’ll have to wait how Jol forms his team, what players can be sold and bought and what will happen to all those promising youngsters HSV stored away in some dungeon under their stadium.

At this moment, Kaltz at least expresses what many people think as well. The whole squad seems to be lacking a clear structure. And Hamburg’s three dutchies could/will attract some interest on the transfer market after the Euros. Jol is a bit of a surprise package and other teams have been busy upgrading their squads…

Oh, and Hamburg would have been smart to extend Olic’s contract prior to the Euros. I think Olic was ready to talk since the beginning of the year and now there’ll be some EPL clubs ready to sign a player with only one year left on his contract.
