Olic to Bayern?

By: Chris | December 9th, 2008

A story today in the online edition of Bild  reports that Ivica Olic has concluded negotiations with Bayern and will sign a contract in January pending the outcome of a physical.

Olic has indicated that he would like to stay with HSV, but has grown increasingly frustrated with the pace of negotiations with Hamburg, and recently instructed his agent, Gordon Stipic, to open negotiations with other clubs. It was thought that there would be no suitors from the Bundesliga, mostly due to Olic’s perceived high price tag, but Bayern publicly expressed interest, and according to the Bild story, interest has turned into an offer. Said story indicates that Olic has agreed to a 3 year contract with a one-year club option. Financial terms of the contract were not leaked.

Despite the dubious source of the story, there are many details in the story that make it seem legit, to wit:  Olic’s German wife, Natalie, has no desire to leave Germany (thus excluding clubs like Liverpool, Valencia, and Juventus); Bayern have a place in the starting XI for him and $/€ with the impending departure of Lukas Podolski; Olic’s desire to play Champion’s League football; And, the fact that this would be a completely free/gratis transfer for Bayern.  As Jan wrote in the comments of the original story last week, this may be an attempt by Stipic to force HSV at the bargaining table, but it’s looking more and more like Olic will be plying his trade elsewhere come August.

I’m not sure how Olic would crack the starting XI in Bayern. Who would he replace? Klose? Ribery? Toni? I don’t see that happening, unless the aforementioned are headed elsewhere.

I hope HSV don’t become the Oakland A’s of the Bundesliga – get talented players and contend, but have them snapped up when the play to their potential.

I don’t know that Toni or Klose would be displaced by Olic, but they’ve both had runs of bad form this season and are starting to have some mileage on them. Evidently, they the feel the drop off in ability between Gomez and Olic is small enough to justify keeping the purse strings tight on this one. Also, I’m sure they are influenced by how well Borowski has done after coming on a free. Personally, I was hoping for Pogrebnyak. Maybe Schalke will call his number now.

According to an interview with Beiersdorfer

BILD: How do you estimate the situation?

Beiersdorfer: „It changed nothing. Except that Bavaria explained officially to be interested in Olic. We delivered our offer. Ivica will decide in December. “

I can tell you it’s extremely unlikely Juventus will make a bid. I’ve read a bit associating us, but it doesn’t seem like there’s interest on either end. He had a great game against us in the Emirates Cup, but we’ve got plenty of forwards…
