Short Passes
By: Chris | January 27th, 2009Quick hits before this evening’s DFB-Pokal tie with 2. Bundesliga side 1860 Munich:
Â
•Mladen Petric’s calf strain has healed and he is in the starting XI this evening.
•Collin Benjamin will be starting for the recently departed Nigel de Jong tonight in the defensive midfield spot
•Who’s in? Marcel Ndjeng, formerly of ‘Gladbach, on a loan.
•Who’s not? Hamburg Offside punching bag Thiago Neves. Neves is unhappy and a reported transfer to Saudi club Al-Hilal for €7 million is in the offing. Al-Hilal would then turn around and loan Neves back to his former club Fluminense. Apparently, it is only a matter of time before he’s outta here. Beiersdorfer won’t comment on it, because “there have been other offers for Neves before now” (so why didn’t you take them?!); Neves says he’d be lying if he said he was happy at HSV.  By the way, Neves did not injure his thigh training in Spain; he hurt it mountain biking. Clearly, his heart is not in it . . .
UPDATED 17:46 GMT–The transfer of Neves to Al-Hilal is dead. Beiersdorfer put the kabosh on the deal when he felt that he didn’ t have enough money for a quality replacement. Here’s the story from the Abendblatt.
•Likely starting XI for tonight’s match versus 1860:
Rost
Demel   Mathijsen   Reinhardt   Aogo
Benjamin    Jarolim   Jansen   Trochowski
Petric   Olic

Â
•If you don’t follow the 2. Bundesliga, 1860 are 11th in the table on 22 points.Â
Â
That’s all for now. Look for Neves to move before week’s end.
