Stop the presses! Again!
By: Chris | August 27th, 2008Many thanks again to most-loyal reader Diana, for the breaking news that HSV have signed Bayern left back Marcell Jansen.
Here’s the story from the Bayern’s web site (in English). This presumably kills the deal for Luciano Monzon (or more likely, Betis hijacked Monzon and HSV needed a backup plan), and he is headed to Real Betis, as I reported earlier today.
Here’s a bio of the lad from the English Wikipedia. He will be presented in Hamburg tomorrow (Thursday), 28 August. The transfer fee has so far been undisclosed and Jansen will reportedly sign a new deal with Hamburg through 2013.
OTHER QUICKIES:
•Anis Ben-Hatira has been loaned to Nürnberg. The same story says that Hannover are now after Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (who is recovering from major knee surgery and has yet to play this season) for a loan spell, but Choupo-Moting and HSV have told Hannover to get lost.
•Simon Braasch of Mopo speculates that prized prospect Macaulay Christantus and Miroslav Stepanek could be loaned out before the transfer window closes Sunday. I don’t know about Stepanek, but I *really* doubt whether HSV will let Christantus go somewhere that they can’t monitor his health and progress, not to mention that the kid has only been in Germany since November 2007 and it’s the first time he’s been away from home. Oh, and there have yet to be any offers for Thimothee Atouba. SIGH.

Is Klinsmann out of his mind or he need money to make a huge deal?

I have *NO* idea, but I am happier than I have been in a long time. Jansen’s injuries must have figured into the reasoning, but I cannot fathom why. . .

The transfer fee appears to be 8 million Euros, which is about a third less than he was purchased for from Gladbach. It leaves Bayern very thin at fullback, and with no reserve squad man in line to step up, the question remains who will they add that would justify creating space by dumping Jansen? I have to confess, since I didn’t see this move coming, I have no idea.

I have to give credit to Beiersdorfer for keeping his transfers a secret until almost the last possible moment. The Alex Silva story emerged only very shortly before Hamburg signed him. Marcel Jansen and Mladen Petric came completely out of the blue. Wow.
Anyway, Jansen played a very strong 2006/2007 season for Gladbach and in the national team. His first season at Bayern was overshadowed by a lengthy injury spell and poor form. During the Euros he was a weak link in a weak German defense. Based on 2006/2007 he’s an absolutely brilliant signing. Based on 2007/2008 he’s a definite step up from Atouba but also a bit of a doubt. Also, I wonder whether Betis really stole Monzon, because all the stories about the deal always came from Argentina. None of the German sources close to Hamburg had any clues about him except for a supposed quote by Jol, that Monzon never was his primary target, once the deal was dead. In case of Monzon you would have needed to give him up to a full season to get used to the new league/country, which isn’t the case with Jansen. Time will tell though, how much of a talent Monzon turns out to be. But if Jansen finds his form, Hamburg won’t need to look back thinking “what if we had signed Monzon instead”. Jansen isn’t the most popular player on the national team, but a German national team player still has a better marketing value in Germany than an unknown Argentine talent. So that should be an economic bonus as well.
I would welcome a Chrisantus loan deal. He didn’t get any first team playing time recently and Jol actually played another youngster (Torun) instead of him. He probably isn’t ready yet. The situation won’t get better once Choupo-Moting returns, who I think is ahead of Chrisantus as well at the moment.

Looks like it won’t be Bradley but Thiago Neves. A lot of German newspapers wrote about the capture of Neves, while reporting about the Jansen transfer.
HSV
- van der Vaart
- Kompany
- Zidan
- Atouba(?)
+ Petric
+ Jansen
+ Silva
+ Neves
+ Pitroipa
= A better HSV?I would be tempted to say so.

The way I see it, Hamburg pulling off a Bayern in regards to the Jansen move. Back then Klinsmann’s appointment as the new Bayern coach earlier in the year took many by surprise (to the extent that one of the newspapers here even had a report about it from AFP). I thought I almost had a heart attack then reading about his appointment.Seriously, I didn’t saw the Jansen move coming. I swear, I almost got the shock of my life when I first saw the report on the kicker website. It’s just like when Klinsmann was announced to be the new coach.
Anyhow, Jansen revealed that the HSV board had contacted him a long time ago and he considered the move over the summer – http://www.sportinglife.com/football/overseas/germany/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=international_feed/08/08/27/SOCCER_Ger-Hamburg_Jansen.html&TEAMHD=germany Sneaky.
‘I would be tempted to say so.’
Maybe we can start to dream.
This is the club I always have a soft spot for. And Jan, I thought both van der Vaart and Kompany had already left the club?Posted from
