The new guy
By: Chris | January 28th, 2009HSV are on the verge of acquiring Deportivo Tachira defensive midfielder and Venezuelan international Tomas Rincon on a loan deal.
Rincon will be on loan until the end of the current campaign. He has been capped 5 times for Venezuela, all during the 2010 WC qualifying. Lazio, Palermo, and an unnamed MLS club were reportedly in the hunt for Rincon as well.
Didi Beiersdorfer told the local media that while Die Rothosen would like to have used some of the €19 million transfer fee received for Nigel de Jong on buying new players, acquiring players on loan deals makes much more sense in the current economic climate.
True to his role as a defensive midfielder, Rincon has yet to score in the Apertura (the Venezuelan first division). Last year, He transferred midseason to Tachira from second division Zamora. Here’s a link to his stat line, and I will say this–the dude is tall (check it out):
Accoriding to the World Wide Leader, Señor Rincon is five hundred seventy-four feet, two inches tall–that equates to 175 meters! Where have Tachira literally been hiding this guy who is 50 stories tall?!
The end game of the Neves-to-Al-Hilal-to-Fluminense was that Berndt Hoffman did not want to give up on Neves yet, despite fact that Neves is now brooding about not transferring. He reportedly spent the second half of Tuesday’s DFB-Pokal tie versus 1860 Munich at the far end of the bench away from the rest of the squad. The other reason is that there are only 16 players available for Friday night’s match versus Bayern (Olic suspended, Chrisantus at U20 African Cup, Atouba/Alex Silva/Choupo-Moting/Castelen are recovering from injuries).
Lastly, our good friend Huub Stevens tendered his resignation at PSV today, and the club’s board of directors accepted it. I have been watching PSV at a relative distance this season and they look nothing like their old selves. Sometimes a manager is just not a good fit, even when he’s been successful in other places. With the benefit of hindsight, Huub’s departure and BMJ’s arrival at Hamburg has worked out for the best.

Here is a video of him from his agency (I suppose): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1G103m1FeSM
Shrunk to 179cm in this one.
Neves seems to be happily burning bridges at the moment. I had hoped he would have enough fight in him to break into the Hamburg squad. But it seems he’s dug himself into his own comfortable hole, where the weather is bad, the coach against him etc. pp. Although with a contract running until 2013, I wouldn’t sell him either but rather look for a loan deal in Europe, where he can polish his market value…

I am glad somebody’s still reading this blog, Jan. After yesterday’s post, I had started to wonder. . .

If there is an equivalent of the NFL’s wide receiver-itis in soccer, I guess Neves has it.
I was feeling good about HSV after the Pokal game, but after learning Bayern pummeled Stuttgart, I think we might running into a buzzsaw on Friday.

I am a bit troubled going into the Bayern match, particularly without Olic and the way that Colin Benjamin and Dennis Aogo played on Tuesday. They were gawd awful. I wonder whether Ndjengs or Rincon will sub in for Benjamin.

Demel would be a better DM than Benjamin but Jol wants Demel instead of Boateng on the right back position, since he is a bit more dynamic going forward (but also a worse defender than Boateng). Jansen could replace Aogo. Too bad Silva is still injured. With Reinhardt in central defense and no de Jong in midfield, there are two particularly vulnerable spots in Hamburg’s defense for Bayern to exploit at the moment (well, and as I mentioned, I personally don’t like Demel on the right side either).
I think Hamburg have only lost one of the last seven encounters against Bayern, so this stat should serve as a little psychological boost.

Eric, let’s face it, VfB aren’t so good this year . . .

Um Chris, are you actually referring to last year? Until the VfB is playing ‘Gladbach on Saturday (tomorrow), the 5-1 thrashing Bayern Munich has handed to the club I support is the first competitive match of this year.
The DFB-Pokal is not shown here at where I am and so I can only depend on the match highlights and the reports. And I almost want to cover my face with horror. As much as I am realistic that our unbeaten run under Markus Babbel will have to end somewhere (he has not lost a match not since he took over from Armin Veh), I have never expected to be in this manner. Ugh.
Anyhow Chris, good luck to the HSV when Bayern comes to town. Hope you guys perform than what the VfB did.
Still can’t believe the Bundesliga is back again. And the match will be shown here.
According to what I read on the league’s official website, 170 countries will be showing this. Ha, Singapore being one of those…
