Transfer Talk: Part 1

By: Evan | June 14th, 2009

So the summer/winter (depending on where you live) transfer window is open. And while they’re not headline making transfers (c. Kaka, Ronaldo, Madrid)…okay, they aren’t anything compared to Man City and Real Madrid.

As everyone who hasn’t been living under a rock knows, Real Madrid are on a spending spree. As everyone knows, Rafael Van der Vaart hasn’t been playing very much at Franco FC. Add these two facts together, and you have a potential transfer. VdV keeps changing his mind (much like a certain does Portuguese player used to) as to whether a transfer is on the books.

Late February:

“Even though I had a nice life in Hamburg, I would not want to leave Real at any price,”

Late March:

“If my World Cup selection is threatened I must think about a transfer.”

Amazing what a bad month can do to a person…
Most of the fans I’ve talked to are of two minds.
1. He left us for Madrid, and after realizing his mistake, wants to come back.
2. We can get a great attacking midfielder, who knows the club, on the cheap. Why haven’t we put in an offer?

Personally, I’m all for him, but I’m interested in your agreement with me opinions….No really, I am. Remember Him?

We’ve also been linked with Brazilian defender, Luisao, also known as Anderson Luis da Silva. For those who’ve never played “connect the dots”, Luisao is the older brother of our own Alex Silva. Luisao currently plays for Portugese team Benfica as a center defender. If the rumours are true, (and they never rarely are), we’re fighting Schalke, Roma, Milan, and United Arab Emirates Man City for his signature.

Before Jol’s departure, it seemed like the transfer of Konstantinos Katsouranis was in the bag. Benfica had admitted they would sell, and Katsouranis was not only yelling our name from the rooftops, but revealed he had received an offer. Unfortunately, we lost Martin Jol, and despite my Googling, I can’t find any more on the matter.

Many of you would be mistaken for thinking that a club decides it’s transfer targets. AZ Alkmaar’s Demy de Zeeuw thought he would buck the trend, by stating that HSV want him.

“HSV are a big team and signing for them is definitely an interesting option.”
“I want to play European football next campaign, but that can also be in the Europa League.”

As Chris has already said, this is another transfer rumour of the pre-Jol era, so it’s reliability is questionable (I mean more than most).

Yet another transfer lined up by the former manager, Tim Borowski of Bayern Munich/Munchen. The midfielder (who was once thought of as the next Michael Ballack) lost his spot in the Starting 11 this season, and could be looking for more game time, so as to secure a spot with the national team.

And so ends Part 1. Part 2, on even more transfer rumours will be up tomorrow. If you have any rumours to add, please post them in the comments below.

Finally, a shameless plug. While many blog are lucky enough to have writers, some go without. The Rangers/AC Siena/PSG/Ajax blogs all need writers. If you’re a fan of any of these clubs, or just want to appease me, then please, read the blogging guidelines, and write to Daryl@theoffside.com

So everyone, start the discussion!

Chris! You are making me laughing out loud here! :) Franco FC…I think a certain Sir Alex Ferguson would like to trademark that, considering he once labelled it as um, Franco’s club.

As ManU supporter who is relieved to see the back of a certain Portugese player (I will not miss Cristiano Ronaldo’s diva-like attitude though), I understand how you feel in regards to VdV.

In my case, Ronaldo had always wanted to play at Real Madrid…and so I knew it was a matter I read that he is on his way there. Both ManU and Real Madrid had finally put me out of my misery on Thursday with the announcement. I was like ‘Thank goodness!’ when I double check what I was reading of the possible world record transfer fee. The fee is almost knocking me out. Really.

like BMJ said, players want to leave, but they (often/usually) end up regretting it.

From what I read, I think Lorik Cana is high on the wishlist but apparently an offer of around 8M was rejected, it could well mean that he wants Champions League football.

Mopo.de reported that the Eljero Elia is nearing completion. This is questionable as he wants to play under Jol. There’s also talk about Kacar (Hertha Berlin), Berg (Groningen), Sparv (Halmstads BK) and possibly Krkic?

    An update on Cana,

Didi is apparently in talks with Olympique Marseille over Lorik Cana.

There’s also talk about Katsouranis and Elia.

I asked the blogger for OM whether or not Cana was going to leave vis-a-vis the Hamburg rumors, and Magnusson emphatically said NO WAY, they were even considering making him captain. I can’t see Cana coming either–OM want waaaaaaay too much money for him (10m+). Didi has *only* budgeted 16-18m for this summer. Go get Rafa, play him behind the Guerrero and Petric, put Jansen, Jarolim, and Trochowski in the midfield, and have Boateng, Alex Silva, Mathijsen, and Aogo on the back line. Case closed. And I like that lineup *A LOT*.

I liked the idea of Borowski coming in. Especially if VdV doesn’t come back. I also read today on the HSV website that they’re interested in Christian Shultz from Hannover 96. Do you think that’s realistic? Any chance that HSV are still pursuing Marko Marin, or has Werder pretty much locked him up?

@Chris: Boateng could be an option for the central defense. He played a fantastic match against Spain’s U21 today. It remains to be seen whether he can consistently pull off these performances as the tournament progresses. One of the best things to come out of Jol’s escape could be a return to form of Boateng.

I also hope that Labaddia will give Rincon a second chance. I thought what he showed in the few matches he played was very promising.

@ Diana: The fee is ridiculous. When you think that there are people living on $1 a day, or less, for a club to spend $80m…

@Ashiq: I doubt Cana would leave. He’s very popular at OM, and they’re playing really well. We would need a big offer to tempt them.
Elia, last I heard, wanted a move to Ajax, as he wanted to be with BMJ. As this was a pre-Jol (a word I will now be copyrighting) transfer, I don’t think it will go through (I could be wrong).
I hadn’t heard about Kacar, Sparv, Berg, or Krkic, I’ll look into them. Last I heard on Katsouranis, he was set to sign for Panathanaikos (spelling?), and it was a done deal. I’ll try find more on that.

@Chris: I’d love to seen Van der Vaart back. He was my favorite (him, Kompany, or dJ) at HSV.
The exams went well. I haven’t posted parts 2+ yet, as I’ve been getting them back, and having to do “reflections”. Topped my English and Maths, and got A’s in Economics, Politics, and Accounting.

@Mark: I would have loved Borowski a few years back, but he’s been plagued by injuries the past seasons. If he stays injury free, I’d love to see him come to Hamburg.
Haven’t seen the Schulz rumour yet. I guess with so many rumours, it’s hard to spot them all. Given the rivalry between 96 and HSV, I can’t see Schulz coming in. But he is a left-back, and as great as our young fullbacks have been, Schulz would add some experience.
To my knowledge, we’re still trying for Marin. Apparently (underline that) Marko wasn’t impressed with our games against Werder under Jol. But we finished better than Bremen in the league (by quite a bit), and Jol has left. I’m hoping we can grab him, as I can see him playing for us (and making us very successful in the process).

Don’t worry everyone, we’ll be sure to do a wrap-up just before the season starts. (we being Chris or myself, depending on who’s lazier)

‘@ Diana: The fee is ridiculous. When you think that there are people living on $1 a day, or less, for a club to spend $80m…’
Right. But if the club can cough up such an amount in such times, well…it is their problem. I know Real Madrid had been criticised in Spain and abroad for what they had been doing so far but, I only know that I am relieved to see the back of Cristiano Ronaldo as a ManU supporter. The faster he is off to Spain, the better.

From the ManU perspective, we could really use some of those money to probably convince fan favourite Carlos Tevez to remain at the club. Though to be honest, I am not too optimistic with what I had been reading just about everyday about Tevez’s future.

By the way, I was reading VdV was saying recently that Manuel Pellegrini had tried to sign him twice from the HSV when Pellegrini was still at Villarreal. Here – http://www.sportinglife.com/football/overseas/spain/news/story_get.cgi?STORY_NAME=international_feed/09/06/15/SOCCER_Spa-Real_Madrid_Van_der_Vaart.html&TEAMHD=spain

Not sure if you read about that though Evan but, yeah.
