Try to follow me

By: Chris | March 25th, 2008

I wrote a pretty lengthy entry about this earlier. We all know that Raphael van Der Vaart is leaving HSV one way or another after this season. His destination is what remains up in the air. We have heard Valencia, Milan, Juventus, and Inter(?!)since last August. The latest suitor was reported to be Chelsea, and Chelsea had even gone so far as sending a scout to watch Hamburg play Leverkusen back in February. Well, this story has some legs now, and the move to Chelsea appears to be ready to make their move. Consider:

-Frank Lampard’s on going contract situation. If you don’t follow Chelsea, Frank has been waiting to sign an extension with CFC for some time now–his current contract expires in 2009. But the ex-Hammer ain’t all that happy about the state of things at Stamford Bridge right now.  Add in the fact that Lampard’s wife is Catalan, that after Barcelona sacks Frank Rijkaard this summer, Barca will name Jose Mourinho as the new boss, that if anyone could overpay for Frank Lampard, it’d be Barcelona. So VDV would have a position and likely regular PT at Chelsea. :)

-Avram Grant better be should be gonekicked up stairs by next season, and his oft named successor is current Barca manager Frank Rijkaard, like VDV, a former Ajax man, as is Chelsea assistant Henk Ten Cate.  So VDV would have an in with the new manager and current assistant.

Here’s what I think, here’s what I know: I know VDV is leaving this summer. As much as I hate that, it’s is a fact. Part of me is secretly (OK-not so secretly: I love Chelsea) hoping the Chelsea rumors are true. But, I know that Frank Lampard is not leaving Chelsea no matter what anyone says. I think the rest of the story–Mourinho and Rijkaard, et. al.–are just that, a nice story to sell papers and drive ad rates on web sites. In the end, we will be watching Van Der Vaart in La Liga or in the Serie A next season.  :(

I have to react, Chris. ;) Now speaking as a ManYoo supporter, (to paraphrase what you said) part of me is secretly hoping the Chelsea rumours are NOT true. :P

If really in the future VDV really heads elsewhere (I don’t know…with all the rumours linking him to this and that), he can head to anywhere but NOT there. But then again, this is the ManYoo supporter in me saying…:P

I want as many clubs in the bidding war as possible. I’m just not sure whether Hamburg should risk completely re-investing the money in one player, or spread it out over several potential superstars.
