What a hoot
By: Chris | June 16th, 2008
Reading some of the trashier sites for a little club news during the Euro, I came across this gem, and nearly pissed myself. Welcome to the party, pal. Beer’s in the kitchen. Seriously, this guys is just now writing that Raphael van Der Vaart may get some transfer offers if Holland continue their hot streak at the Euro? Really? He is playing quite well, if a bit quietly for Holland. But his perfectly struck corner in the match versus France (on the first goal) was but a brief glimpse of his mad skillz.
I guess there is some tiny bit of news fresh perspective in this story in that 1) there aren’t the usually continental suspects (Juve, Inter, Barca–doesn’t it seem like 10 years ago now that we were throwing around Valencia?); and 2) the author speculates that there are a whole lot more EPL sides than just Chelsea now following our boy. The best thing to come of this: If there really are that many EPL sides interested in VDV, his price will be sky high.
OK, let’s pretend that there is some merit to all of the teams mentioned. Who realistically would want him?
Chelsea? Sure, especially if Lampard walks. Have the means as well.
United? Not so sure. Who’s out for United to bring VDV in? Definitely have the dough.
City? Maybe. Have the means.
Newcastle? Maybe. Not sure about the €/£/$.
Spurs? Maybe. Not sure about the €/£/$, not that I have doubts, I just don’t know.
Scousers? Again, not so sure. Same question as United–who’s out to make room? Not so sure about the means at this point.
This kind of thing is fun to write about and there are so many scenarios below the surface to explore–what does HSV do with the transfer fee? What players might be thrown in if it’s a cash and players deal? What will HSV’s lineup look like come August?
BUT, considering the source and the time of year, this is the highest of high comedy, as my muse might say.

‘especially if Lampard walks.’
I can’t stop giggling over that for some reason.
But speaking of the man, news came out yesterday Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti has indentified Lampard as a transfer target. I get my source from the FIFA website but the original source is the Inter official website (straight out of Moratti’s mouth).http://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/clubfootball/news/newsid=805484.html#inter+take+lampard
As a ManU fan myself Chris, I’m not sure whether VDV will fit in at United. But then I’m aware Sir Alex Ferguson will be given a transfer kitty and a striker is like among his targets. I may be wrong, given I first read of it like around the time after United won the Premier League title.
