Winner! Winner! Lobster dinner!
By: Chris | February 27th, 2008Updated : Bundesliga Offside captain Jan has a nice write-up on the Intertoto Cup “victory”. Read it here.
Overlooked in this space and others on The Offside was the fact that HSV backed into the Intertoto Cup as Atletico Madrid were ousted from the UEFA Cup in the Round of 32. So we got that going for us, which is nice. [Editor's note: We are not going to mention in this space that this is the first silverware of any kind HSV have won in 20+ years. Nope. Not gonna do it.]
This week HSV travel to Wolfsburg for a German (DFB-Pokal) Cup quarter final match. Wolves come into tonight’s match unbeaten in 2008, managing 3 wins (including a nice victory over Schalke) and a draw so far. HSV continued their string of draws in the B’liga with a 1-1 dust-up in Munich this Sunday past. This is the only all 1.Bundesliga match in the round of 8. The teams have met only once previously in the Cup competition, waaaaay back in 1969, with HSV winning 2-1. The sides played earlier this year in Hamburg, with Wolves stealing a point late, 2-2.
Raphael van Der Vaart is expected to play, giving HSV a needed offensive boost. SWAG prediction: I frankly have *no* idea how this one will go. I’ll swing for the fences and say HSV 1 Wolfsburg 0, with the tally coming from Guerrero.

Point taken. Congrats on the Intertoto, which I believe is the second-to-last one that UEFA is giving out, since the new competition format doesn’t include it.

ARGH! Wolfsburg have just scored in the 2nd extra time to go up 2-1! There’s approximately 5 minutes left.
